Eight Views of Omi
(近江八景)
The traditional “Omi Hakkei”, or “Eight Views of Omi”, were most famously depicted as ukiyo-e style woodblocks by Utagawa Hiroshige. “Omi” refers to Shiga Prefecture, which was formerly known as Omi Province.
In 2016 while living in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, I tracked down the location of each of Hiroshige’s eight views and drew a modern version. I found that many landmarks from Hiroshige’s views were completely gone, but some were still present, and each echoed of a long history. You can read more about each location here, or scroll down to see the artworks.
